Hot flushes and irregular cycles are the symptoms everyone knows about. But the lived experience of perimenopause is full of surprises that catch even well-informed women off guard. The list below is ours: the things nobody had warned us about.
The unexpected list
Brain fog. Losing a word mid-sentence at work, and being convinced something is seriously wrong, is how it usually arrives. Hormonal fluctuation affects verbal memory and concentration, and the anxiety of noticing it makes the fog worse.
Joint and muscle aches. Estrogen plays a role in joint health, and many women develop new aches during perimenopause. For some they ease again as things settle; if yours do not, that is worth raising rather than waiting out.
Tinnitus and heart palpitations. Both can spike with hormonal shifts and are rarely mentioned in advance.
What helps
When women describe finding their footing, the same two things come up. First, a clinician who took them seriously. Second, community: hearing that other women's strange symptoms were shared, not unique.
